Before You Buy a Joint Supplement: Five Questions Worth Asking
A supplement label can tell you a lot, but the details behind it matter too. These five questions are a starting point for looking beyond the headline. They are also questions guiding my work as I develop LYVA.
1. What is in the recommended daily serving?
Check the ingredient list, ingredient forms and amounts. Can you tell how much of each ingredient you would take each day? A long ingredient list alone does not establish how well a product works.
2. Is the research about this product?
A study might investigate an individual ingredient, a different formula or the finished product you are considering. Check which one. Where possible, compare the ingredient form and daily amount with those used in the study.
3. What kind of study supports the claim?
Was it laboratory research, an animal study, an observational study or a human trial? Who participated, how many people took part and how long did it last? Look at what researchers measured, not just the headline.
4. What does “tested” mean?
Ask what was tested, by whom and whether the results relate to the finished product or a particular batch. Tests for ingredient content and contaminants serve a different purpose from clinical studies of health outcomes.
5. What should I know before taking it?
Read the directions, warnings and suitability information. If you take medicines, have a medical condition, are pregnant or are breastfeeding, ask a pharmacist or appropriate healthcare professional about the ingredients before use.
A final question for the brand
Can you show me the evidence behind that statement, and explain its limits?
A clear answer should help you understand what is known, what was tested and what remains uncertain.
From LYVA
I’m William, the founder of LYVA. These questions help guide the daily food supplement I’m developing. LYVA Flex is still in development and has not been tested in a clinical trial.
